At this time of year the Library team are usually busy preparing for 24/7 opening for the December exams. We didn’t manage to offer 24/7 last year due to Covid but had hoped to be in a position to do so this year.
Recently the Students’ Union and the Library met to discuss the issue. Together, and with the agreement of the University Executive, we have reluctantly decided that 24/7 opening of the Library during the December exams is not possible again this year. Covid cases in Scotland are still very high and are increasing. Whilst this is the case, and social distancing and the wearing of face coverings are still mandatory in the Library, we feel it would be irresponsible of us to encourage students to be on campus outwith regular opening hours.
Although the Library won’t be open 24/7 this December, it is open for 90 hours per week. Full details can be found on our opening hours page. And whilst we can’t offer you a peaceful place to study at 2am this year, we do provide 24/7 access all year round to great online resources including databases, journal articles, ebooks, referencing guides, reading lists and more. There’s also a live chat box where you can get additional assistance when the Library is closed. See the Library website for full information.
Please be assured that the Library and the Students’ Union are working together on this issue and the best interests of students are uppermost in our minds. We’re now looking forward into 2022 and very much hope to be able to offer 24/7 Library opening as usual during the April/May exams. We’ll keep this under review and make an announcement nearer the time.
